Vaginal relaxation is a solution to the problem of Vaginismus. Vaginismus is a reflex response of the body against vaginal penetration. It results in an involuntary contraction of vaginal muscles in response to sexual intercourse and any other vaginal penetration, making it impossible and painful – vaginismus results from sex attempts and often the first attempted intercourse. The term vaginismus is broadly using as a muscle spasm resulting from the insertion of objects into the vagina, such as sexual penetration, speculums, and tampons. The causes of Vaginismus may include the following.

  • Fear of pain (Harm- avoidance behavior)
  • History of sexual assault
  • Endometriosis
  • Vaginitis (Yeast Infection)
  • Prior episiotomy
  • Emotional stress

Treatment of Vaginismus

Vaginismus is considered a psychological disorder that results from various factors like menopause, insufficient vaginal lubrication, and painful sex due to infection or cysts. Disease should not be confused with dyspareunia, a medical condition of painful sex resulting from physical causes, cysts, fibromas, and pelvic inflammatory diseases. On the contrary, Vaginismus is a spasm of vaginal muscles due to various psychological and physical reasons. The treatment of Vaginismus is vaginal muscles relaxation in the following ways;

  • Psychological treatment
  • Sexual counseling
  • Use of vaginal dilators, i.e., Hegar dilators or vaginal trainers
  • Kegel exercises
  • Lubricants
  • Neuromodulators, i.e., Botulinum toxin A (Botox)

Botox treatment for vaginal relaxation

Botulinum toxin A is a temporary solution for reducing hypertonicity of the pelvic floor muscles. Injection of Botox is given to the vaginal muscles, and it causes the temporary paralysis of the muscles by effectively controlling the involuntary contractions. Botulinum toxins are injected into the bulbospongiosus muscles of the vagina. The technique for Botox injections is the same as that of cosmetic Botox. Usually, 200 units of Botox are injected per session of vaginal relaxation. The process is carried out in an outpatient setting and starts by giving local or general anesthesia according to the patient’s physical needs. One Botox injection may last for three to five months, and it would take four to five days to recover from the procedure and enjoy exclusive benefits of the process. Sometimes Botox alone is efficient in giving the desired outcomes of vaginal relaxation. In some conditions, therapy combines with vaginal dilators and psychological treatment to address the emotional issues that cannot be achieved alone with Botox.
