What is Hymenoplasty?

Hymenoplasty is an aesthetic repair and restoration of a woman’s hymen by a plastic surgery procedure. The process is also known as revirginization or hymenorrhaphy. The hymen is a circular membranous structure that covers the vaginal orifice backward from the urethral orifice. It provides an opening for the menstrual flow of blood. The hymen is considered a token of virginity, so mostly it is done for religious and cultural reasons. Hymen can be damaged or torn due to tampon insertion, exercise, and the first sexual penetration. The surgery process involves the stitching of torn edges of hymen with dissolvable sutures by giving local anesthesia in an outpatient setting. Dr. Rita Shats, a very talented, experienced, and trained aesthetic surgeon, has expertise in the cosmetic rejuvenation of the human body’s gynecological aspects. Plus Cosmetic Surgery Center aims to be exceptionally efficient with advanced technologies and specialists who are among the world’s best.

Who is an ideal candidate for Hymenoplasty?

  • The reconstruction and rejuvenation of hymen is ideal for the women who want to have an original status of the hymen for cultural reasons and to represent the symbolic appearance of virginity.
  • Hymenoplasty is also done for non-sexual reasons such as heavy exercises, horseback riding, and tampon insertion may also cause tears of the hymen. It needs to be repaired by taking advantage of the surgery. The goal of the process is to improve the hymen in their original form.
  • Hymenoplasty also provides the psychological proclaiming control to the sexually assaulted women who want to present virginity symbol to the person of their choice. The process offers physical restoration of the hymen as well as psychological comfort to the patient.
  • The process is also ideal and provides added benefits to the women who have given one or multiple vaginal childbirths and have flaccid or weaken vaginal muscles. Hymenoplasty tightens these muscles, and the women can experience more stimulating and pleasurable sex.
  • In some girls, the hymen is imperforated and covers the whole vaginal opening, and it doesn’t allow the menstrual blood flow to come out. The process is known as hymenotomy, where a small hole is created in the membrane to ease the flow of menstrual blood.

The procedure of Hymenoplasty is simple and can be covered in an outpatient surgical facility in the duration of almost one to two hours, depending on the repair needed.  In the process, the torn edges of the hymen are cut away gently, and dissolvable sutures stitch the remaining tissues.  The process leaves a small opening to restore hymen in standard size and shape. If there is an absence of hymen, the process creates the hymen using the body’s thin vaginal mucosa or synthetic tissues. The blood supply is also added either by the body’s vaginal flap or artificially. So the process achieves the goal of subsequent bleeding upon the sexual penetration.

What to expect before Hymenoplasty?

Patients are advised to quit smoking four weeks before and after the surgery. Blood-thinning medications and birth control drugs should also not be taken ten weeks before surgery. Quitting alcohol three weeks before surgery will help in quick recovery and healing from the process.

What to expect after Hymenoplasty?

Hymenoplasty is carried out in a clinical setting that does not require any hospital stay. Women can go back to work the next day after the surgery. The patient may observe slight bleeding and swell immediately after the surgery, but that’s perfectly normal. The patient should avoid heavy exercises and weight lifting 48-72 hours after the surgery. Surgery is particular in giving the natural outcomes that it doesn’t leave any sign of surgery, and it’s impossible to differentiate between the natural and reconstructed hymen. The complete healing process takes six weeks; after that, women can experience all the sensations and pleasures associated with virginal sex.

Risks and complications associated with Hymenoplasty are infrequent, but patients are advised to contact their physicians if the following symptoms occur.
